A suspect has been apprehended following a robbery attempt at Carter County Bank’s 200 Bemberg Road location Thursday morning.
According to information provided by Captain Joy Shoun of the Elizabethton Police Department, Alexander Leroy, 33, was arrested and charged with attempted aggravated robbery and was transported to Carter County Jail with a court date set for Tuesday, Jan. 24.
In a report issued from the department, EPD received an alarm from Carter County Bank at 11:48 a.m. and arrived shortly after to discover an attempt was made to rob the bank.
“We are grateful that no customers or employees were hurt during the incident that took place at our branch location on Bemberg Road,” Carter County Bank President and Chief Operating Officer Dale Fair said. “The staff there did a great job in handling the situation in accordance with our policies and procedures.
“The branch is closed for the remainder of today in cooperation with authorities while they investigate the incident,” he continued. “The branch will be open Friday for regular business hours.”
A male subject reportedly entered the store and requested a sum of cash from the tellers. Witnesses added that while Leroy did not display a weapon, the behavior, movements and action led them to believe that he may be concealing a weapon in his pocket.
The report added that employees were unable to provide the amount of cash requested, so Leroy left the bank without any money.
Around noon, it was noted that an EPD officer observed a vehicle matching the description from a witness on scene on West G Street. The suspect was then identified and detained.
Fair added he appreciated the work performed by the police department.
“We are grateful for the assistance of the Elizabethton Police Department and are pleased with how they handled the matter,” he said.
