A City man faces a criminal charge after police say he ran off a city street and drove through residence yards while intoxicated.
Officers of the Elizabethton Police Department arrested John Large, 64, of 508 West E St., Elizabethton, on Wednesday and charged him with driving under the influence.
According to police reports, officers of the EPD were dispatched to the area of East H Street shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a possibly intoxicated driver.
“Upon arrival I located the caller on East H Street, who showed me the suspect’s vehicle,” EPD Officer James Stevens said. “The driver had left the roadway and drove between houses traveling in residence yards.”
Stevens said when he approached the driver, later identified as Large, he could smell an odor like an alcoholic beverage emitting from the vehicle and saw an open beer can in the car’s cup holder.
“I asked Mr. Large where he was attempting to go,” Stevens said. “Mr. Large stated that he was attempting to go home at 508 West E St.”
Stevens asked Large to perform a several field sobriety tests, which the officer said Large performed poorly on.
Large was taken into custody and transported to the Carter County Detention Center, where he remains held under a $1,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Carter County General Sessions Court today for arraignment.
