Police are investigating a shooting incident at a Carter County home that sent one man to the hospital early Friday morning.
According to police reports, officers of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 139 Ridgeland Drive, Johnson City, after someone called 911 reporting shots had been fired at the home. Ridgeland Drive is located in the Western portion of Carter County just off of Old Lewis Road.
When officers arrived on the scene he found Roy Little and his wife, Mary, in the basement of the home and saw that Roy Little had suffered a gunshot wound.
“He said he opened the door to let his dog out and there was a white male wearing a hoodie standing just outside his door,” Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford said. “He grabbed a gun of his and they became involved in a shoot out. He was shot in the shoulder and transported to the Medical Center.”
“The suspect fled on foot toward Old Lewis Road,” Lunceford added.
Lunceford said he believed Little had been treated at the hospital and then later released.
Lunceford said there was evidence at the scene that two firearms were involved in the incident. According to the Sheriff, there are no known witnesses or suspects at this time and no known reasoning behind the incident.
Investigators continued to look into the incident on Friday and returned to the scene,” Lunceford said.
“We’re going to interview neighbors and hopefully someone around there has some security cameras,” he said.
According to a police report on the shooting, Little told officers he fired “numerous” shots and emptied his handgun, however he said he did not know if any of the shots struck the suspect.
Little described the suspect as a white male wearing a grey and blue hoodie.
“As I continued to ask questions, the victim became very uncooperative and belligerent,” CCSO Sgt. Brian Durham said in his police report.
Officers found several spent shell casings from a 9mm in the area where Little said the incident occurred. Officers also found a 9mm handgun lying on a fireplace with the slide locked back.
“The storm door to the residence was shattered, along with the right rear window of the victim’s car,” Durham said. “While looking inside the car, I observed two live .22 caliber rounds in the vehicle. Also, loose cash was observed lying inside the vehicle.”
Lunceford said more information about the case would be released when it is available.
