Taking advantage of hot shooting early the Happy Valley Lady Warriors earned a relatively easy 71-50 Three Rivers Conference victory over Sullivan North on Friday night at Bayless gymnasium.

Shooting an incredible 81.1 percent from the floor in the first period Happy Valley raced to a 24-17 lead after one period. The Lady Warriors connected on nine-of-11 in the period and were a perfect four-for-four from long range.

Unfortunately Sullivan North (2-13, 0-6 TRC) was equally hot hitting eight-of-10 but were zero-for-three from the foul line. Bayley McGee hit a deuce and a trey and two free throws for HV while Kaitlyn Roberts hit two deuces and a trey for the Warriors.

Of course that pace could not be maintained by either squad in the second period but HV’s Adrienne Henegar was three-for-four from three-point range for nine points as the Warriors led 36-23 at the half.

The Warriors (11-8, 4-2 TRC) first half shooting percentage was a stellar 12-for-27 (44.4 percent) and from long range the Warriors shot 6-for-11 (54.5 percent). Roberts, McGee and Emily Whitaker each scored seven points in the first half for HV.

Shenoah Bradley and Tanesha Lunceford each had six points for the Lady Golden Raiders in the first half. Henegar opened the third period with a deuce and a pair of free throws while Kaitlyn Vaughn and Bradley had two point baskets for North as HV led 40-27 at the 4:38 mark.

Vaughn scored a pair of baskets for North before McGee’s three-point play gave the Warriors a 47-33 advantage with 1:31 left in the third.

HV opened the fourth period with a six point run to take a 53-35 lead before Kaley Crawford’s free throws broke the run. At the 5:00 mark of the fourth HV ran its lead to 62-39 after a three-point play by Whitaker and two free throws from McGee. Whitaker finished with a game high 16 points.

Senior post Austin Hicks – one night after scoring his 1,000th career point – scored nine first half points for Happy Valley to help the Warriors to a 25-22 halftime lead over North. Tyler Arnold scored 13 points for the Golden Raiders in the first half on six-for-12 shooting from the floor.

“We had a stretch where we lost a couple of games, but coach Babb got us together and said it isn’t season ending,” Hicks said. “We got together in practice and worked hard. We worked as a team and have really produced. We are looking to pass first and are sharing the ball and that has given us confidence in our shooting.”

HV (11-8, 3-3 TRC) took a 31-25 lead early in the third period on a pair of buckets from Dillon Barlow and a deuce from Chris Young. Matt Burk answered with a trey for North and Blake Spradlin hit two from the line for a 31-27 tally.

Jake Surcey and Devan Price exchanged three point shots as HV led 34-30 at the 2:59 mark of the third quarter. The Warriors extended to a 40-30 lead behind deuces from Brayden Sams – who hit two – and Bryce Carter.

Isaiah Rhodes hit a basket in the paint as HV took a 42-30 lead into the fourth quarter. In the third period, HV outscored North 17-8.

HV opened a 49-33 lead at the 6:39 mark of regulation on back-to-back steals and baskets from Noah Worley and Surcey, but Arnold dropped in a trey at the other end for the Raiders. After a trey from Young the Warriors took a 57-42 lead with 4:22 left in the game, but a pair of three’s from Burk helped North battled to within nine at 63-54 with 42 seconds left.

“We made it difficult on ourselves in the first half,” Warriors head coach Chuck Babb said. “We did a really poor job on the boards and we struggled to guard them. They hit some long three’s and we had to push forward. We got some steals and a little more discipline and got a little lead.”
