The dream was able to become a reality for Crystal and Jeff Daugherty this week.
Always active at Farmer John’s Produce, located on West Elk Avenue in Elizabethton, seeing a building right across the road from the produce shop left Crystal wanting to add an extra bit of flare to the food scene in the county.
It all came to fruition Wednesday as Lil Dip and Deli opened to the public with rousing success, according to Crystal.
“We’ve been in the Farmer John’s building now for six years,” she said. “I watched this building … I always wanted to have a drive-thru. We’ve had ice cream in our main building but I always wanted to do a drive-thru. When the building was empty, I knew there was my chance.”
Right across the road from Farmer John’s, several customers stopped by the drive-thru window and placed their orders for the variety of food and refreshments offered.
“We have been slammed today,” Crystal said with a smile. “It’s been a wonderful day, it’s just been one after another. We didn’t expect it to be like this.”
Crystal, Jeff, Mary Stout and Dawn Cox helped man the fort inside. For those unable to make it for the first day, there’s no need to fret.
“We’re going to be opened 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday,” Crystal said. “Maybe into the spring we’ll look at closing around 8 p.m. We’ll also look into it later on about possibly opening on Sunday.”
Patrons can expect a bevy of treats when they stop by, with different homemade dishes being offered.
“All of our meats and cheeses are Amish,” she said. “We have homemade soups, homemade pinto beans, homemade cornbread, cold sandwiches and grilled sandwiches. We have 22 flavors of Hershey’s ice cream and milkshakes. Some of our specialties include a chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream in the middle, chocolate chip brownie with vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate, some very good things.”
