Saturday, April 1

Watauga Valley Fife and Drums from 10 a.m. until noon. The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications and parades. This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up. Musical experience is welcome but not necessary; just come with a willingness to learn. Meet our volunteer coordinator John Large at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center. Lessons are free of charge, just call and let us know you’re coming!

Inkle Weaving from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. Join instructor Ronnie Lail and learn how to weave wide sashes, narrow bands, and shoelaces on a loom that is light-weight and easy to carry around! You can create wonderful patterns through varied placement of colorful thread. Bring scissors. The cost is $60 which includes a loom to keep and all the supplies. If you have your own supplies the cost is $10 for instruction or $20 for instruction and thread.

Sunday, April 2

Handspinning for Beginners from 1:30 until 4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. Join instructor Margaret Crouch for this class. Have you always wanted to learn to spin? This class is meant for those who have never used a spinning wheel before. You’ll learn the basics of drafting wool and using the wheel to make yarn. If you have a spinning wheel, plan to bring it, along with your spare bobbins. Cost of the class is $35 which includes prepared wool roving ready to spin.

Carter Mansion Celebration & Militia Muster from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the historic Carter Mansion located at 1031 Broad St., Elizabethton. Join us for two days of history, traditional arts and family fun as we celebrate the oldest frame house in Tennessee, and the historically prominent Carter family. Travel back to the 1780s and tour the Carter Mansion. Witness living history reenactors demonstrating aspects of 18th century life, and see local craftsmen showcasing traditional skills.

Watercolor Painting — Join instructor Barbara Jernigan for a watercolor painting workshop focused on Landscape Painting and Sketching Outdoors. From 9 a.m. until noon at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. Cost: $12 (plus supplies) or $20 (includes supplies). Learn and practice watercolor techniques and style.

Forestland management program — If you own forestland in the Tri-Cities area, the Appalachian Woodlands Alliance and Virginia Forest Landowner Program invite you to learn how you can work with local mills and foresters to manage your woodlands for long-term profit and forest health. On April 8, from 9 am to 1 pm, join us at the Domtar Kingsport mill, located at 100 Clinchfield Street, Kingsport, TN, 37660, for a free lunch and a workshop with local forestry experts. Everyone is welcome to join the Watauga Valley Art League for their monthly meetings that feature a guest speakers and fellowship with area artists. WVAL meets the second Sunday of each month, except October.

Basketry – Basil and Thyme — Join instructor Candy Alexander from 9 a.m .until 4 p.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. Create a traditional Appalachian herb basket with a wrapped handle. Learn to weave a God’s Eye. A variety of woven patterns will be offered for the hoop.  Dimensions: 12” rnd. x 10” high.  Bring garden or kitchen shears, an old hand towel, pencil, small measuring tape, small spray bottle of water, and strong clothespins. The cost of the program is $28.

Community Plant Exchange — from 9 until 10 a.m. at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. The front parking lot will be bustling this morning!  Bring cuttings and potted outdoor and indoor plants, to exchange for species you don’t have — a fun way to meet other gardeners and increase your collection.
