Friends of Library Used Book Sale set for this week

Published 6:34 pm Monday, April 24, 2017

Adventure, romance, mystery, and intrigue await you at the Friends of the Library’s annual Spring Used Book Sale.

Each year, the Friends of the Library host a used book sale in the Spring and one in the Fall to help raise money to support the operations of the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library. The group helps the library pay for special projects or programs that aren’t funded by the city or county in the library’s budget. All of the money raised by the used book sale goes to support the library.

In the past, the Friends group has helped fund renovations to the library, purchased furniture, and helped provide funding for programs for young readers.

Each year the sale features around 10,000 books donated by the Friends group and the community for the event. With a wide variety of genres and reading levels, there is something for everyone at the sale.

The Friends of the Library Spring Used Book Sale will take place on Friday and Saturday, April. 28 and 29 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Center located at 300 Mill St.

Those who are members of the Friends of Library group will get to take part in special shopping hours before the sale on Thursday evening, April 27, from 6-8 p.m. Membership to the Friends of the Library group is only $10, and interested individuals can show up to the sale on Thursday evening and join to take part in the early sale according to Lilo Duncan, of the Friends of the Library group.

Hardback books will be priced $1 each while paperbacks will cost 50 cents each, a price that hasn’t changed in years according to Duncan.

“This is really a service for the community,” Duncan said. “There are some folks who can’t pay more than that for a book. That’s why we leave it the way it is.”

The group is still accepting donations for the event. Those wishing to donate books can take them to the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Books can also be dropped off on Wednesday at the Parks and Recreation Center on Mill Street while the sale is being set up or those donating books can bring them with them to the sale on any of the three days.
