Charlie Mae Grant, 88, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Charlie was born in Little Creek, La., but had lived in Elizabethton since 1955. She was the daughter of the late Jones Finus Bowman and Veola Smith Bowman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie A. Grant Jr.; a daughter, Wanda Simmons; and two sons, Terry Grant and Gary Grant.
Charlie was a homemaker and attended Heartland Fellowship. She enjoyed being with her family, flowers, and watching birds.
Those left to cherish her memory include a son, James Grant, of North Carolina; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Grant, of Elizabethton; a son-in-law, Ralph Simmons, of Elizabethton; 10 grandchildren, Jimmy Grant, Rev. Mark Simmons, Steve Grant, Lisa Grant, Travis Simmons, Theresa Stevens, Adam Elliott, Bobby Elliott, Charlene Hudgins and Natalie Canipe; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a very special sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth “Sis” Grant; and several nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate the life of Charlie Mae Grant will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 8, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Marvin Slagle and Rev. Mark Simmons officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, or at the residence of a grandson, Steve Grant, 128 Whitson Drive, Elizabethton, at any time. The graveside service will be conducted at noon Friday, June 9, in the Patton-Simmons Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Woody Whisenhunt and Jonesborough Jim. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, at 11 a.m. Friday to go in procession.
