Commission approves rezoning for new chapel

A vacant building nestled across the road from Elizabethton Federal Savings will soon be utilized for business.

The Elizabethton Regional Planning Commission met Thursday inside Council Chambers and went voted unanimously to rezone property located at 402 Bemberg Road.

Formerly the home of a pharmacy, commissioners voted to rezone the property to B2 designation to allow the building be renovated into a chapel to be utilized by Tribute Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

The consensus of the Commission was that it would be great to see the vacant property be used in the future.

While discussing the rezoning, commissioners revisited a discussion from previous meetings addressing the codes within the city. Commissioner brought up the point that it would be better for the property to be designated as B1, but chapels are only allowed for B2.

Elizabethton Planning and Development Director Jon Hartman added that looking at changing the codes to adapt to current development with the community is currently being looked at and is on the itinerary for the new year.

In other business, commissioners voted to rezone property at 1554 Milligan Highway to be developed into condos and approved a subdivision for Highway 91, near the Elizabethton Municipal Airport.
