Fall activities to pick up at Parks & Rec

As the fall season approaches the area, Elizabethton Parks & Recreation are gearing up for a busy athletic season.
With a bevy of events on the horizon, athletic activities tend to take up a good chunk of time during this season, according to Athletics and Aquatics Director David Nanney.
“We always receive a great deal of support from the community for our different athletic leagues,” Nanney said. “It’s always exciting to offer these kind of activities to the public and expand our reach by adding different programs.”
A pair of registration deadlines are looming for two popular activities, Nanney added. The ever-popular flag football co-ed league is still accepting teams until Sunday, Sept. 10. Co-ed volleyball teams are also being accepted until Monday, Sept. 11.
“We get a chance to have several teams in both leagues,” Nanney said. “Last year, we had around 10 teams in volleyball. We’re hoping to see the numbers grow this year.”
Football teams are comprised of six players and compete in an eight-game regular season with a postseason. The cost of registration is $260 per team. For volleyball, the cost is $250 per team.
Residents 16 years old can compete in either league but must have a signed waiver from a parent or guardian. Individuals 18 years and older can register without a waiver.
Basketball also picks up soon for the winter, Nanny explained. Registration is now open for both men’s and women’s basketball leagues.
If sports your cup of tea, don’t fret. Nanney added the department’s walking club is continually seeking participants.
“That’s been a popular addition,” he said. “We encourage anybody that wants to stop by to take part in the club. We reserve a block of time in the morning, but people can still walk inside the gym, as long as there aren’t any big events going on. In the colder months, we tend to see a spike in participation.”
A new date for the Tweetsie Trail Treasure Trip is expected to be made soon, Nanney added. Elizabethton’s annual event was postponed over the weekend due to inclement weather.
