John Gather Markland

John Gather Markland, 89, of Roan Mountain, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
A native of Roan Mountain, he was a son of the late William Roscoe and Pearl Harrison Markland.
Mr. Markland was a retired carpenter. He was a member and deacon of St. John Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Bowling Markland, April 10, 2004; a son, Yancel “Yank” Markland; and his brothers and sisters, Ralph Harrison, Annie Waycaster, Henry, Gurnie and Lee Markland, Ella Mae McKinney and Christine Markland.
Survivors include five children, Larry Dean Markland and Gail Markland, both of Hampton, Dana Markland and wife Betty, Elizabethton, Perry Markland and wife Joan and Pam Timbs and husband Eddie, all of Roan Mountain; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Lyons and Louise Baker, both of Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for John Gaither Markland will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Sheppard and the Rev. Carl Grindstaff officiating. Music will be provided by Lacey Greenwell. The graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 25, in the Moreland Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be his church family. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Joey Ketterman and the staff of ICU, Sycamore Shoals Hospital, for all the care shown to our father. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at the home of Perry Markland, Crabtree Road, Roan Mountain.
