Huggins was driving a 2001 Volkswagon Jetta northbound on Highway 19E when she crossed over the center line and struck a 2001 Ford F350 pickup truck head-on. THP Trooper Christopher Dunn identified the driver of the truck as 34-year-old Juan Apariciovidales of Hampton. According to Dunn, Apariciovidales was traveling southbound when Huggins vehicle struck his truck.

After the initial crash, the Ford truck was struck once again, this time from behind by a 1999 Chevrolet Aerostar minivan. Dunn identified the driver of the minivan as 35-year-old Javier Hernandez, of Elizabethton. Hernandez was also traveling southbound according to Dunn.

Hernandez, Apariciovidales, and a passenger in the Ford pickup truck, identified as 28-year-old Hector Vargas Rojas, all suffered injuries in the crash.

According to Dunn’s preliminary report on the accident, drugs or alcohol were not contributing factors to the crash. Dunn issued both Hernandez and Apariciovidales citations charging them with driving without a license.

Following the crash, a stretch of Highway 19E was shutdown and traffic rerouted around the area as emergency crews worked to treat the injured and clear the scene.
