Jean Marie Freeman, 93, of Elizabethton, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at Hillview Health Center. Jean was born in La Verne, Calif., to the late Martin and Mary Brewer Scapple. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Freeman Sr., and one brother, William B. Scapple and his wife, Betty.
Jean moved to Elizabethton in 1991 and was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church. She had worked as an office manager for Hardin County Nursing Home for 16 years. Jean enjoyed knitting, gardening, reading (loved books) and cooking. She loved animals and supported them through ASPCA and she also supported the Navajo Indian Children’s Charity.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Dr. John L. Freeman Jr. and wife Katherine, Elizabethton, and William P. Freeman and wife Ann, Johnson City; her daughter, Marilou Hildenbrand and husband John, Thibodaux, La.; six grandchildren, Fran Spero, Dr. John Hildenbrand and wife Betsy, Dr. Natalie Freeman, Lee A. Freeman and wife Erin, James Freeman and Melissa Freeman; and nine great-grandchildren, Jacob Spero, Ian Spero, Christian Hildenbrand, Grayson Hildenbrand, Alex Hildenbrand, Stuart Hildenbrand, Luke Anderson, John Anderson and John Clark Freeman. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The graveside and inurnment service for Jean Marie Freeman will be conducted at 10:45 a.m. Friday, January 19, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Rev. Paul Helphinstine officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Jean’s friends at Sycamore Springs Assisted Living in Elizabethton, especially Carolyn Pless. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:35 a.m. Friday. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the ASPCA, P.O.
