Hobart G. Birchfield

Hobart G. Birchfield, 76, 208A West Mill Street, Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to meet his Lord on Monday, April 23, 2018, at the Community Living Center at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center with his family by his side.
Mr. Birchfield was a 1960 graduate of Cloudland High School. He was a former employee of Magnavox and retired from Snap-On Tools in 2004 on the same day as his best friend, Curtis Hyder. He served in the U.S. Army.
His proudest accomplishment was being baptized on April 3, 2018 along with his great-granddaughter, Ava Rogers, by Pastor Ben Cole and Mike Cole.
Mr. Birchfield could always be seen by anyone driving thru Blackbottom, sitting on his front porch, waving at every car and always wearing his UT orange shirts.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Maude Holden, and his brother, Chucky Holden.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Sue Birchfield; his daughters and their spouses, Tammie and Mike Cole, Terri and Ron Oliver, Missy and David Nichols and Frannie Birchfield; his sons, Ted and Timothy Pippin and Ritchie Birchfield and wife Amy. Mr. Birchfield is also survived by one sister, Eddie Tipton; his very best friends, Mike Cole and Curtis Hyder; his neighbor of 20 years, Reba Barnett; and the mother of his biological children, Sylvia Birchfield. Mr. Birchfield has 17 grandchildren, his Princess – Alana Rogers, Cody and Cane Cannon, Brett and Ben Cole, Becky Cole, Tonda Cochran, Tory Morton, Joe, Jeremy, Jordan and Christopher Pippin, Haven Woods, Tyler Nichols, Hayley Birchfield, Alexis R’Mani and Jahsan Harper. He also has 13 great-grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Birchfield will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ben Cole officiating and music by his daughter, Tammie Cole. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Full Military Honors by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 2:20 p.m. Friday and are asked to wear UT orange shirts and jeans in Hobe’s honor, are Mike Cole, Sloan Rogers, Ted Pippin, Timothy Pippin, Ron Oliver, Cane Cannon and Cody Cannon. Honorary pallbearers are Curtis Hyder, Lee Miller and Tory Morton. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the employees of the Community Living Center at Mountain Home VA, especially nurses Mark and Kenny, Dr. Shannon Emmert, Amedisys Home Healthcare, employees of the Wellmont Cancer Center, especially Amy, Kelly, Teresa and Myra, his VA caregiver, Lynn Nelen, Pastor Ray Colbaugh and Pastor Nick Colbaugh. Flowers are appreciated, but those who prefer may donate in Hobe’s Honor to the Recovery Soldiers Ministry, P.O. Box 603, Elizabethton, TN 37643. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 2:20 p.m. Friday.
