Harley Eugene “Gene” Renfro, 82, of Johnson City, passed away Friday, May 11, 2018, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
A native of Marion, N.C., he was a son of the late Glen M. and Lucy Laughrun Renfro. He had lived in Tennessee for a number of years.
Gene served in the United States Army. He was a Millwright; he worked in a machine shop and in mechanical maintenance. Gene owned and operated Renfro’s Market & Deli for a number of years. He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Elizabethton.
Gene was also a member of Watauga Lodge #622, Unicoi Chapter #267, Order of Eastern Star, Jericho Shrine Temple, Unaka Rod & Gun Club, and a life-time member of the NRA.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Helen Hodge Renfro, and a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Elizabeth Katie Renfro, Johnson City.
Funeral services for Harley Eugene “Gene” Renfro will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jack Lloyd officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, in the Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Nathan Jennings officiating. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, will be Jimmy Hilton, Teddy Sims, David Markland, Greg Moreland, Larry Burrow and Richard Sutphin. Honorary pallbearers will be Wilber Mills, R.L. Hambrick, Harlen Clark, Allen Anderson, Herb Payelian, his church family and Shriners. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted following the funeral service by Watauga Masonic Lodge #622. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Gene to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605-4255. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday to go to the cemetery.
