Sarah M. Shook, 100, of Elizabethton, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at Hillview Health Care Center. She was a daughter of the late William Roscoe and Annie Ogden Shook. Miss Shook was born in Canton, N.C., and moved to Elizabethton with her family at an early age. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Ogden Shook on April 6, 1972, William R. Shook on July 8, 1980, and Dr. Burton Shook on April 10, 1983; a nephew, Burton Shook Jr.; and a niece, Rebecca Ann Shook.
Miss Shook attended public schools in Elizabethton and received a Permanent Teaching Certificate from East Tennessee State Teachers College. She taught school in Carter County for four years and in 1943 began working at North American Rayon Corporation in the spinning office where she worked for 43 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Elizabethton for over 50 years and a member of the Philathea Sunday School Class there.
Those left to cherish her memory include her nieces and nephews, Sally Shook Harris of Elizabethton, Ellen Shook Hutchins of Elizabethton, Joe Shook of Johnson City, Barbara Shook Hodson of Vienna, Va., Kathie Shook Piper of Houston, Texas, Ceci Shook McAuliffe of Atlanta, Ga., Mary Elizabeth Shook Carter of Gloucester, Va., and Betsey Shook Venitt of Phoenix, Ariz.
A graveside service for Miss Shook will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 1, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Todd Hallman officiating. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet the family at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Saturday. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to First Baptist Church, 212 East F Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643. The family would like to express a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the staff of Hillview Health Care Center for the love and care shown to Miss Shook and the family during her time there.
