C. Kenneth Brumit

C. Kenneth Brumit, 92, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 24, 2018, from his residence. Kenneth was born in Elizabethton to the late Walter and Theresa Clark Brumit. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Amy Fortune Russell.
Kenneth was the owner and president of Southern Finance, which he started in 1953 and he retired in 1999. He was a United States Navy veteran, having served in World War II in the V12 Program. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church where he was also a member of the Virgil Anderson Sunday School Class and was a previous member of the Philosophy Sunday School Class.
Kenneth was a member of Sequoyah Council of the Boys Scouts of America, a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight, the Civitan Club, and the Holston Home for Children, where he had served as chairman and trustee. He was the founder of the Watauga Eagle Squadron, an aviation education program, which was previously in the Elizabethton City Schools and continues to be in the Carter County Schools.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Bettye Lanning Fortune Brumit, of the home; his sons, Steve Brumit and wife Cindy of Kingsport, John Brumit of Elizabethton and Bill Brumit and wife Kim of Knoxville; his daughter, Betsy Moakler and husband Rich of Johnson City; a stepson, Butch Fortune and wife Susan of Johnson City; a brother, Horace Brumit and wife SarahMack of Banner Elk, N.C.; his grandchildren, Jennifer Rodriquez and husband A.J., Allison Jackson and husband Shavargo, Stephanie Brumit, Curtis Brumit, Chris Brumit, Jessica Brumit, Sean Moakler, Shannon Moakler, Lyndl Fortune and Rob Fortune; one great-grandson, Lavar Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
A service to honor and celebrate the life of C. Kenneth Brumit will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 30, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. William J. Carter officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. Sunday. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 S.
