Betty Lou Street, 77, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at the residence of her daughter, following an extended illness. Betty was born in Roan Mountain, Tenn., to the late Earl David and Willie Lee Shell Cox. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack McClain, and one brother, George Shell.
Betty was a loving mother and grandmother and retired as a cook. She loved her granddogs, Christmas and shopping.
Those left to cherish her memory include five daughters, Theresa Hensley and husband Gary of Johnson City, Tammy Whitehead and husband Rev. Gary Whitehead of Hampton, Penny Street of Roan Mountain, Judy Cox and husband Ron of Gray and Darlene Higgins and husband Darren of Erwin; four grandchildren, Brent McClain and wife Heather, Cody Honeycutt and wife Nicole, Shelby Higgins and Noah Whitehead; her great-grandchildren, Kaylee Honeycutt and Jayda McClain; a special aunt, Frankie Cox; and also her special neighbors, Sue and Helen. Several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Betty Lou Street will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 11, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Kevin Laws and Rev. Gary Whitehead officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, or at the residence at anytime. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, October 12, in the Shell Family Cemetery in the Hampton Creek Community of Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be Brent McClain, Cody Honeycutt, Noah Whitehead, Darren Higgins, Gary Whitehead and Terry Cox. Ron Cox will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the Tetrick Rhododendron Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Friday to go in procession.
