ERWIN – Hampton built a large enough lead at Unicoi County Monday and left with a 69-64 win.
The Bulldogs enjoyed a 46-32 lead with eight minutes left. Unicoi County then doubled their point total in just one quarter.
“We were trying to substitute some there late and I just thought they got hot. I don’t think it was anything we did, they just got hot and started feeling it. Unicoi County has some good shooters,” Hampton head coach Ned Smith said.
Jordan Bentley scored almost half of his 17 points in the final eight minutes. He was 6-for-7 at the line in the fourth and a field goal gave him eight points in eight minutes. That offensive output paced the winning side.
Overall the Bulldogs, now 14-7 on the season, went 13-for-21 at the free throw line in the fourth and were 21-for-31 in the game. On the other end Unicoi County was 7-for-12 in the game.
Mitchell Tolley scored nine of his 12 points in the third quarter. Caleb Oaks scored in each quarter to finish with 10 points. Morgan Lyons and Garrett Vines each chipped in nine apiece. Vines was a near-perfect 6-for-7 at the line.
Brock Thompson helped spur the Blue Devils’ rally. He scored 19 in the fourth and totaled 28 for the game. He knocked down a quartet of three pointers. Austin O’Dell added 11 more with nine via Brett Lingerfelt.

Hampton’s Leanne Guinn led everyone with 17 points. She had six in the final quarter. Stephanie Campbell started quick with a dozen first-half points, but only added one more in the second half. That effort helped Hampton to a 31-26 advantage at the halftime break. The Lady Bulldogs’ record went to 6-15 with the outcome.
Kaylee Hendrickson was effective behind the arc as well. She hit three buckets behind the three-point line en route to a team-best 16 points for Unicoi County. Allee Griffith chipped in 10 more for the Lady Blue Devils who have a 10-5 overall record.
