Ellen Hoss Hughes

Ellen Hoss Hughes, 90, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, from the Waters of Roan Highlands Nursing Center. Ellen was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., to the late James Garfield Hoss and Myrtle Crumley Hoss. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Hughes; her son, Roger Hughes; her twin sister, Helen Hoss Hughes; five sisters, Lillian Ellis, Ruth Lewis, Mae Winters, Edith Jones and Margaret Buck; and two brothers, Carl Hoss and Paul Hoss.
Ellen had been employed by Tri-State Container and retired from Kennametal. She was a member of Cove Creek Presbyterian Church in Roan Mountain. Ellen loved to quilt, gardening, loved animals and enjoyed cooking and canning.
Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Danny Hughes and wife Diana of Roan Mountain, Tenn., and Gary Dean Hughes of Florida; one daughter, Phyllis Whitehead and husband Danny of Knoxville, Tenn.; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one sister, Lydia Ann Shipley of Bluff City, Tenn.; and special friends, Wilma Townsend and Carolyn Johnson. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Ellen Hoss Hughes will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, August 2, in the Hughes and Arrowood Cemetery in Roan Mountain with Rev. Delaney Berry officiating. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Friday. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Waters of Roan Highlands for the loving care given to Mrs. Hughes and a special thank you to all her friends who came by to visit with her.
