Unaka – While most of the attention in Carter County is on the Elizabethton vs. Science Hill matchup in week one, the Unaka Rangers and their fans are focused on a mini rivalry of their own against the Huskies of North Greene High School.

With a little bit of a trip for the Rangers to take for their week one matchup, head coach O’Brien Bennett said, “We’ve scrimmaged against Midway and Union County down in Kingston.

“We’ve gone through our pregame routine on the bus to let our guys know the expectations we have for the traveling aspect so I don’t think an hour ride will be too big of a deal for us.”

Talking about his game plan for North Greene Bennett expounded, “We’ve watched a ton of film on these guys so I think our guys have a pretty good idea of what they’re gonna come out and do Friday.

“They’re trying to change the culture down there just like we are over here and Coach Murray does a great job with his kids and I know they’re gonna be prepared for us so we need to have that same level of preparedness.”

Bennett continued with a list full of keys to success.

“Our keys to success are gonna be about the same every week. We want to create explosive plays offensively and limit that same explosive type of plays on defense.

“We want to limit our turnovers and increase the rate of turnovers on the defensive side. We wanna keep things simple for our guys and execute,” continued Bennett.

“On our team, we’ve got a huge amount of players that are going to have a great impact on the game.

“First, we’re looking for a big season from Logan Benway who is gonna be a key part of our offense. And of course, you can’t run the ball without the offensive line,” Bennett commented.

“Our linemen have made great strides this offseason and we’re expecting a big game from our guys up front. We’re gonna need big things out of all of our skill players including Devin Ramsey, Nick Shell, Austin Drew, and Nick Bowers.”

Unaka will kick off their season at 7:30 p.m. tonight and will hopefully head back to Stoney Creek with a victory.
