Linda Lou Whitehead Hughes

Linda Lou Whitehead Hughes, 96, of Hampton, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2019, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born May 13, 1923 on Dennis Cove Mountain to the late Lloyd and Hettie Ward Whitehead. Her father’s family was one of the earliest settlers of Dennis Cove Mountain. She was a graduate of Cloudland High School.
Mrs. Hughes taught school on Dennis Cove Mountain for several years. She was a housewife, farmer, loved to read, sing, quilt and sew. In earlier years she attended Pearce Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Hughes, in 1984; three children, Loretta Hughes, Wayne Hughes and Larry Hughes; three grandchildren, Allen Hughes, Christy Hughes and Larry Hughes Jr.; and six brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her children, Lloyd (Barbara) Hughes, Asheville, N.C., Bill (Barbara) Hughes, Elizabethton, and Brenda (Rocky) Bridgeman, Hampton; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Linda Lou Whitehead Hughes will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 28, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Sam Icenhour officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 29, in the Hughes-Bridgeman Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Thursday. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Dr. Hanson, Hospice Care and the Nursing Staff at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
