Gray man indicted for assaulting wife

According to Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal, Todd Darrell Briggs, 35, 302 Boone Road, was indicted by a Washington County grand jury earlier this month following an investigation involving domestic assault.

On the morning of August 16, deputies responded to Franklin Woods Hospital to investigate a woman who had suffered second and third-degree burns to her head, arms and torso areas. She was later airlifted to Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville due to the seriousness of her injuries.

An investigation revealed that the assault occurred at 302 Boone Road in Gray and that it was domestic in nature. During an altercation with his wife, Briggs doused rubbing alcohol on the bedroom floor and also on his wife. Briggs then lit the rubbing alcohol with a butane lighter causing serious injury to the victim and the damages to the home.

Investigators presented the case to a Washington County grand jury ad a true bill was returned charging Briggs with one count of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, in addition to one count of aggravated arson.

Briggs was located and taken into custody Wednesday night with the assistance of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office. He was booked into the Washington County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled for an appearance in Criminal Court on Dec. 2 at 9 a.m.
