There were two ways that Thursday’s Three Rivers Conference volleyball match between the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones and the Sullivan Central Lady Cougars could have gone for the Lady Cyclones after Tuesday’s disappointing loss to Sullivan South.

At the fork in the road, the first path would be to come in a little deflated and allow the Lady Cougars to take the win and pull even in the standings or take the second path and keep the Lady Cougars at bay to remaining solidly in second place in District 1-AA play.

Elizabethton made the wise choice and took the second path as Coach Leslee Bradley’s team jumped out to a 25-17 first set win and didn’t look back as the Lady Cyclones blasted their way to a 3-1 match victory giving them an 18-13 overall record but most importantly keeping them one game behind South which helps with seeding come tournament time.

After taking the first set, the Lady Cyclones won set two 25-20 before Central rallied to stay in the match to win the third set 27-25. However, the Lady Cyclones weren’t going to allow any surprises as they closed out the match with a 25-22 fourth set win.

It was the same cast of characters who once again banded together to keep Elizabethton rolling along as senior Morgan Smith reached double digits in both kills and digs recording 10 kills and 15 digs in a lead role for her team.

Senior Deanna Hull was solid defensively registering 35 digs while another senior, Hannah Boster, continued to use her height at the net to ring up nine kills.

Whitley Maupin (8), Brittany Kitchens (7), Kaitlin Bailey (7), Mattie Davis (6), and Kallista DePrimo (1) recorded the other kills in the match for Elizabethton.

Kitchens added reached double-digits in defensive digs statistically with 15 as did Maupin with 11. DePrimo logged nine digs while Josie Lyons came up with eight.

The match was a lengthy one as it took Elizabethton two hours and 10 minutes to put the Lady Cougars away. Elizabethton travels to Chuckey Doak on Tuesday for a Three Rivers Conference match with the Lady Black Knights. The game time is 6:30 pm.
