A Hero Called Mom: Noel Estep

“Sometimes holding on does more damage than letting go.” This quote was said to me by a woman who is strong, beautiful, independent, brave, and inspiring. Her name is Noel Estep, but I call her mom. Noel is a real hero in many ways. Heroes go through missions or journeys.

Noel does, too, but real life missions. They could be as small as picking me up from school and fighting traffic or going through a custody battle to win my brother.

She has such a strong personality that many people wish to have. It is very hard to get through 95% of the things she gets through.

Noel can make even the most small or boring things the least boring thing to do. Almost no one would think going to the bank or going to get an X-Ray because you fell and broke a bone would be fun, but Noel’s beautiful and calming presence makes you feel better. She is a loving person who sometimes cares for others too much.

I watch as she walks into the room and there is nothing made dramatic when this is said, people stare at her. She always thinks she did something wrong, but it is always the opposite. Independence, bravery, confidence, and love has never looked so good on someone. She has not failed to make herself and others proud of her.

This story is part of a series of articles from Michael Grindstaff’s Language Arts Class at Elizabethton High School.

Students were asked to write about inspirational people in their lives. The Elizabethton Star is proud to share these with our readers.
