Charles Wayne “Charlie” Whitson, 44, of Roan Mountain, died Saturday, September 28, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born November 16, 1974 in Johnson City, he had lived his entire life in Carter County. He was the oldest of four brothers.
Charlie enjoyed the outdoors and always wanted to bring a smile to everyone’s face. He was well known by all to be the jokester of the family. Prior to his illness he was a construction worker.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carroll Hamby, December 9, 2018, and an infant brother, Brian Hamby.
Charlie is survived by his loving mother, Peggy Hamby, of the home; his wife, Lisa Ann Brown Whitson, Valdosta, Ga.; his son, Randell Wayne Whitson, Elizabethton; his brothers, Greg Whitson and Joey Malphurs, both of Alachua, Fla., and Doodle and Christy Hamby, Roan Mountain; and three nephews, Cody, Skyler and Devin, all of Roan Mountain.
Funeral services for Charles Wayne “Charlie” Whitson will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 1, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Joey Malphurs officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, in the Hamby Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday, will be Greg Whitson, Doodle Hamby, Joey Malphurs, Joe Hamby, Chris Williams, Brian Hamby, Allen Hamby, Chad Street and Robert Whitson. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of the 2800 Wing of Johnson City Medical Center for the excellent care Charlie received. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at our website at www.memorialfcelizabethton.com.
