It was a special night on the pitch at Citizens Bank Stadium as the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones took time out to honor five seniors who have helped Elizabethton go 10-3 coming into the night’s match and an overall record of 40-27-3 in the four years in the orange and black.
They can add another win to the previous totals as the Lady Cyclones worked through a steady rain late in the match to take a 4-nil victory over the visiting Lady Pioneers of Crockett.
“We played well tonight,” said Lady Cyclone head coach Bill McClay. “The field was fast and we adapted well where we had several good periods of possession and created some nice goals.
“While Senior Night may have provided a little distraction perhaps, I don’t believe it affected our play especially the seniors who were determined to make Senior Night that much more special with a victory.
Senior Lexi Brown got things off on the right track at the 8:43 minute when she netted a ball on an assist from another senior Kaylen Shell to make it 1-nil Lady Cyclones.
Brown returned the favor just over eight minutes later as Shell knocked in Elizabethton’s second goal to extend the advantage to 2-nil.
The Lady Pioneers simply had no answer for the Lady Cyclones as most of the first half was spent with ‘Betsy on the attack and when Crockett managed to push the ball toward the net, freshman goalkeeper Morgan Heaton was up to the task.
Heaton on at least three attempts offered up her body to secure the ball and keep Crockett off the board.
After intermission, the Lady Cyclones added a pair of goals as Shell took a feed from Maddie O’Quinn at the 48:43 minute to push the advantage to 3-nil.
O’Quinn later would add her own goal with 11 minutes left in the contest to give the game it’s final score of 4-nil. The Lady Cyclones will wrap up their regular season with a road trip to Morristown West on Thursday.
They will host a district playoff game on Tuesday, October 15th at 6 pm. The team has yet to be determined.
