Fields of Faith coming to Hampton High School

Fields of Faith is coming to Carter County Wednesday, providing an opportunity for students to learn about God in a familiar environment: right in their school’s football field, alongside their fellow athletes and students.

Elijah Smith, president of Hampton High School’s Fellowship for Christian Athletes, said the event is organized by students, for students.

“This is my third year being involved in it,” Smith said. “It is important to know people can still come together.”

The event will take place Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the JC Campbell Stadium at Hampton High School at 6:30 p.m.

“For kids that might not get to go to church, they can hear the Word and are able to have him in their lives,” he said. “He is there to help us.”

Fields of Faith has become a national event over the years, incorporating schools and universities all over the country.

In HHS’s case, each year’s Field of Faith brings a guest speaker to make the experience memorable. This year, the school is hosting Josh Goodling, a professional speaker who has been all over the country talking about his experience with terminal illness and faith in the face of adversity and hardship.

Smith said encouraging fellow students to participate in events like this is a key part of student ministry, as making the faith more prominent in people’s lives makes others more aware of what it is all about.

“A lot of kids believe if their friends do it, they will do it, too,” he said. “Eventually, it will come to them that they are hearing the Word.”

Smith said anyone and everyone is invited to attend the event, regardless of their personal beliefs.

In fact, this standpoint applies to the FCA Club itself. Smith said the club is accepting of any student looking to learn more about what they do.

“You do not have to be an athlete to join,” he said. “If you dedicate your life to Christ, it is the best thing that can happen to you. […] We invite everybody, your whole church if you want to.”
