HAMPTON – The night was a special one for the senior players on Hampton’s football team as the Bulldogs recognized the contribution of its senior players.

But to put the cherry on top of the sundae, it became even more special as a result of Hampton’s big win and Happy Valley’s loss to South Greene as the Bulldogs catapulted into the captain’s seat by taking the conference title and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Senior Matt Hughes put the Bulldogs out front in the first quarter when he finished off a nine-yard run for a score and the two-point conversion made it 8-0 Hampton.

The Bulldogs were just getting started.

Macon Barden reeled off a 22-yard scoring run in the second quarter that pushed the ‘Dogs out to a 16-0 lead after the two-point conversion try was good.

Hampton tacked on another score a little later thanks in part to a 22-yard sack and a poor punt by Cosby as Conor Jones went to the airways and found Gage Chambers on a 50-yard bomb with 4:10 to go to the half to make it 24-0 after the two-point conversion.

The Bulldogs kept clawing out the Eagles feathers as Jones connected with Isiah Greenwell on a 13-yard scoring toss with 30 seconds remaining in the first half of play. The two-point conversion once again was successful as the Bulldogs took a 32-0 lead into the locker room at the half.

It would only take Hampton two plays to reach pay dirt again in the third quarter as on their first possession Caleb Oaks rambled 37 yards for a score and a 40-0 advantage after the two-point conversion.

With a continuous clock rolling along, it was Oaks again but this time on a receiving end of a 29-yard touchdown pass with 9:10 left in the game. The conversion failed and Hampton was cruising at 46-0.

The Bulldogs added one more score with two minutes left to play in the game as Jonathan Greenwell tucked away a 24-yard touchdown reception to put the finishing touches on a big night for the Bulldogs.

The point-after kick was good and Hampton had its final score of 53-0.

Hampton (8-2) will host the Cumberland Gap Panthers (4-6) in the first round of the playoffs next Friday at 7 pm at JC Campbell Stadium.
