2019 Food City Thanksgiving Classic Unicoi County narrowly holds off Lady ‘Dogs, 47-38

BLUFF CITY – The Hampton Lady Bulldogs were looking to top off a great Thanksgiving feast by taking a bite out of the Unicoi County Lady Blue Devils in the 2019 Food City Thanksgiving Classic being played at Sullivan East High School on Friday morning.
However, the Lady Blue Devils were able to keep Hampton at a pitchfork’s length to escape with a nine-point win, 47-38.
Hampton couldn’t get on track early in the contest as the Lady Blue Devils owned an 11-5 advantage at the first horn.
Carolina Podvin did most of the damage for Unicoi County in the first period scoring seven of the 11 points recorded by the Lady Blue Devils.
Sara Orr and Linsey Jenkins scored two each for Hampton in the period.
Both teams came to life in the second period as they battled to a 14-14 quarter allowing Unicoi Co. to take a 25-19 lead to the locker room.
Tenley Holt scored six points for the Lady Blue Devils in the stanza while Hampton received six points from Hannah Collins and a trey apiece from Madison McClain and Destini Milhorn.
The Lady Blue Devils managed to expand their lead in the third quarter by outscoring Hampton 14-11 and taking a nine-point edge, 39-30 into the final eight minutes of play.
Hazen Brumitt’s four points were tops in the third period for the Lady Bulldogs.
Needing to throw ice on the Lady Blue Devils scoring in the final quarter, the Lady Bulldogs forced Unicoi County to earn the win from the charity stripe as only two of the Lady Blue Devil’s eight points in the final quarter was scored from the field.
The Lady Bulldogs sent the Lady Devils to the line 16 times where Unicoi County managed to hit only six of those free shots.
Meanwhile, Hampton couldn’t get any closer scoring eight points themselves to drop the contest.
Milhorn led the Lady ‘Dogs with nine points in the contest while Collins finished with eight. Nicole Guy dropped in six points while Orr and Brumitt recorded four points apiece. McClain totaled three.
Skylar Hicks and Linsey Jenkins closed out the Lady Bulldogs books with two points apiece.
Unicoi County was paced by Podvin’s 16 points. Ashton Varcie totaled 12 points in the win as well.
