A furious fourth-quarter rally fell just short for Hampton on Tuesday night at Van Huss / White gymnasium as the Bulldogs fell to South Greene 62-58 in a non-conference contest. South Greene never trailed in this one scoring the first seven points of the game before sophomore Morgan Lyons deuce stopped the bleeding.
“We dug ourselves a deep hole,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “I thought our shot selection was bad in the first half. We took some quick shots and didn’t get to the hole enough to draw some fouls.”
Hampton trailed 46-33 going into the fourth quarter but put on a typical Bulldog rally whittling down the lead by turning up the defensive intensity. A seven-point surge cut the Rebels lead to 51-43 at the 3:36 mark of the fourth quarter which included a trey from Lyons.
The ‘Dogs continued to press the Rebels and forced six turnovers in the period and at the 1:20 mark Hampton cut the deficit to 59-50 and after a pair of free throws from Jordan Bentley and a deuce from Izaak Hill made it a 59-54 contest.
“In the second half we stepped up and scored off the defense,” Smith said. “The kids played hard and didn’t quit. We battled back and looked to tie the game late.”
Senior Matt Hughes overcame a poor shooting night in which he was 1-for-7 from distance finally connected on a trey to make it a 61-58 game with 13.2 ticks left in regulation. Isaac Hoese’s free throw capped off the scoring for the night and South Greene held on for the win.
South Greene ended the first period with a 14-8 advantage behind seven points each from post Sully Fox and guard Clint Lamb.
The ‘Dogs (3-3) trailed 32-20 at the break with South Greene hitting 13-of-14 from the line as Hampton was plagued with foul trouble from the outset.
Fox and Lamb each scored 18 to lead all scorers while Bentley and Rocky Croy paced Hampton with 11 each.

The first quarter saw several turnovers as play was haphazard but Hampton stayed with South Greene as the period ended in a 12-12 draw. Linsey Jenkins had five points in the period hitting a trey and a deuce for the Lady Bulldogs.
Madison McClain opened the second quarter with a trey for Hampton (0-5), but Kiley Collins answered with one of her own for the Lady Rebels as the score stood 15-15. South Greene went on an 11-5 run over the next two minutes to take a 26-20 lead with 4:19 left in the period.
A Linsey Jenkins free throw halted the SG run at 17 and made it a 32-21 contest with just over a minute left in the half. McClain scored 10 first-half points to pace Hampton and Riley Collins had 11 for the Rebels as SG led 34-23 at the break.
South Greene (4-1) scored the first 25 points of the third period with Jayden Merriweather scoring seven of those with Addison Williams chipping in with six as the Rebels pulled out to a 59-25 lead with 12.3 remaining in the period.
A Hazen Brumitt deuce was the only points of the quarter for Hampton as SG entered the fourth quarter with a 61-25 advantage.
