Jr. Rangers split with Highlanders

Behind the hot hand of Kaiden Benway, the Unaka boys scored a 55-33 win over Cloudland.  The Jr. Lady Landers won by the score of 27-12.
Benway hit six three-pointers and scored 30 points for the Rangers. The game was never close as Unaka led 13-3 at the first stop and was up
35-13 by halftime.
Unaka only hit five of 20 free throws while Cloudland was seven of 31.
Nick Caraway was the high scorer for Cloudland with 12 points as he hit three long shots. Landon Hughes who missed the first half came in and took over the boards, but the Ranger defense and the full-court pressure would prevail for the win.
T.J. Thomas was second-highest scorer for Unaka with 10 points.
“Any win is a good win but beating Cloudland on our eighth-grade night means a lot. Our eighth grade and our whole team have put the time in and worked hard to record this win” said Unaka Jr. Ranger Coach Josh Deyton.
The Jr. Rangers are now 5-4 and will play their homecoming on Thursday night.

In the girl’s action, the Jr. Lady ‘Landers jumped out to a 15-point lead and held Unaka scoreless in the first quarter.
Layken Blair scored seven points and Adrianna Birchfield followed with six in the opening period.
Sadie Williams hit two baskets for the Rangers in the second and it was one more than the Jr. ‘Landers hit.
Unaka would be held scoreless in the third as Cloudland went up 21-4. Williams would add six more points in the fourth but Cloudland held on for a 27-12 win.
Williams was the high scorer for Unaka with 10 while Blair led the Jr. Lady ‘Landers with 13.
