Some Trump supporters are concerned by his actions

To the Editor:

In his December 11 letter to the editor, D.D. Nave seems to have assumed that an earlier writer was an “indoctrinated Trump hater” because they called out the seriousness of Trump’s impeachment charges. But there are many who have been Trump supporters, who like some of the shake-ups he has caused, but are also very disturbed by some of his actions.

The founders of our country viewed foreign interference in our government as one of the greatest dangers for our country. Our President has asked a foreign government to investigate one of his political opponents. Based on testimony given at the impeachment inquiry, the announcement of an investigation seemed to be more important to Trump than the investigation. The announcement would throw a shadow on Trump’s opponent, even if the investigation never happened. So, by asking for Ukraine to announce an investigation of his opponent’s family, Trump was encouraging a foreign government to help sway the 2020 election in his favor.

This is an example of the type of foreign interference our founding fathers were concerned about, even if they didn’t think of our President trying to make it happen. Trump’s request is disturbing even though Ukraine’s President did not meet the request, just as attempted murder is a crime even though the murder is not successful. If our President has nothing to hide, he should not be preventing people with first-hand knowledge from testifying to Congress about a very serious concern.

I understand that most of our Congressmen want to get re-elected, and getting re-elected means having campaign money, and the easiest way to get campaign money is to follow the party line. But for the good of our country, some things really need independent thought.
