With it almost being Christmas, the Chuckey Doak Lady Black Knights were trying to give the Hampton Lady Bulldogs opportunity after opportunity to catch and pass them in Thursday’s game from VanHuss White Gym in Hampton.
But unfortunately for Hampton, the Lady Bulldogs had about as much chance of seizing the win as Nancy Pelosi has of getting a Christmas present from Donald Trump as time after time Hampton couldn’t cross the speed hump in a 51-46 loss to their visitors from Greeneville.
The Lady Bulldogs got off to an ominous start as Chuckey Doak got off to a hot start in the opening quarter taking an 18-7 lead at the first horn.
Earendia Davis did most of the damage to Hampton in the early going hitting for eight points in the quarter. She had solid help from Sierra Jaynes who netted five points.
Sara Orr, Hannah Collins, Destini Milhorn each totaled two points apiece in the opening stanza.
The Lady Bulldogs turned it around in the second quarter finding their offensive rhythm outscoring Chuckey Doak 16-9 to make it a 27-23 score going into the locker room at intermission.
Collins helped to get the offense going as she netted six points in the eight-minute quarter. Five Lady ‘Dogs tallied two points in the period including Orr, Bridgette Heaton, Linsey Jenkins, Nicole Guy, and Hazen Brumitt.
With the lead only being four, the Lady Bulldogs had ample opportunity to turn the tide and put themselves into position for a win.
However, every time Hampton appeared to be making a surge, mistakes in ball handling or the passing game resulted in easy baskets at the opposite end of the court allowing the Lady Black Knights the opportunity to keep the home team at bay.
Hampton was within four points at least four times in the second half and it was the same song and dance as Chuckey Doak found ways to gain separation leading to the tough-to-swallow defeat.
Collins paced Hampton with 20 points in the contest. Jenkins totaled eight points while a trio of Lady ‘Dogs scored four points including Orr, Heaton, and Guy.
Madison McClain, Jenkins, and Brumitt all finished with two points each for Hampton.
Davis also finished with 20 points for Chuckey Doak and Jaynes closed out her night with 15 points. Hannah Roberts (6), Madison Marrion (5), Taliah Johnson (3), and Breanna Roberts (2) closed out the scoring for the Lady Black Knights.
Hampton plays host to the Lady Warriors of Happy Valley on Monday at 6:30 pm.
