It was difficult to figure out who wanted to not score a basket in Monday night’s girls’ contest between Happy Valley and Hampton.
It would have probably have been easier to find snow in the desert than a basket in the early going as it took Hampton 11 minutes of action before the first points of the game would go on the Lady Bulldog’s side of the scoreboard.
Things weren’t much better for the Lady Warriors who owned a 9-0 lead after the first quarter and a not-so-impressive 13-6 lead at intermission with both teams missing out on point-blank shots and forcing turnover after turnover defensively on both sides of the court.
Happy Valley did look a little better offensively after the break recording 12 points while Hampton struggled to find any rhythm whatsoever as Coach Bud Hazelwoods team could manage to add only five more points to their scoring ledger trailing 25-11 entering the fourth and final period of action.
The Lady ‘Dogs managed to get their best offensive production of the night in the fourth quarter scoring eight points, however the Lady Warriors finally found their touch to score 15 in the closing period of play as well.
Included in the 15 points were two points that put senior post, Shayln Whitson, over the 1,000 point for her career as a Lady Warrior.
Whitson led all scorers with 13 points. Autumn Henegar added six points. The Lady Warriors in actual count had 11 players score in the contest.
Madison McClain had five points to lead the Lady Bulldogs in scoring in the contest.
“That was a rough game,” said Happy Valley head coach Thomas Gouge. “Both teams couldn’t score, both teams missing layups – I am just proud that we found a way to win it.
“If you can win on the road against one of your rivals you will take it always. We are really proud of Shalyn getting her 1,000th point tonight.
“I think both teams were just sluggish being as close to Christmas as we are.”
