RED BANKS, Miss. (AP) — A body found Tuesday in north Mississippi remains unidentified.

Marshall County Coroner James Richard Anderson said Thursday that it could be next week before the woman’s identity is confirmed. He says autopsies are being delayed because of Christmas holidays.

Two hunters found the dead white female in her 20s underneath a bridge near Red Banks.

Marshall County sheriff’s Maj. Kelly McMillen told local news outlets that it appears that the woman was killed somewhere else and her body dumped under the bridge. Based on visible injuries, McMillen said the woman may have been beaten to death.

McMillen said the body appears to have been under the bridge for some time, possibly a period of weeks. Officers are asking that anyone with information contact them.

Investigators are consulting with Tennessee police agencies in nearby Memphis and Collierville about missing persons.
