MEMPHIS (AP) — More than 38,000 customers in the Tennessee county that includes Memphis lost power during heavy storms Saturday, a utility said.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water says that approximately 23,000 customers remained without power Saturday morning due to the high winds and lightning that moved quickly through the area.

Damage is widespread throughout Tennessee’s most populous county, including downed trees and power poles, some of which will need to be replaced, according to the utility.

The utility says it will have to remove debris before repairs can begin, complicating efforts to restore power. Thirty tree-trimming crews are working to clear areas and 18 troubleshooters are assessing damage and making repairs. The utility has asked for outside help to assist in repairs.
