Cyclones earn seventh on mats at Greeneville Invitational

GREENEVILLE – The Elizabethton Cyclone wrestling team managed to work in some very critical time on the mat at the Greeneville Invitational as the Cyclones tune-up for the regional wrestling duals on Friday that will take place in John Treadway Gym.
 
Elizabethton participated in 12 weight classes with a mixed bag of results on the day.
 
Holden Roaten finished sixth in 106 after dropping a tight 19-16 decision to Josh Helm from Fairview in the fifth-place match. After a promising start to the day for Isaiah King (24-7) at 120 winning his first three matches, King was forced to take a medical forfeit in his match with Crockett’s Parker Sams.
 
In 126 action, Peyton Freeman worked his way to a fifth-place finish winning by pinfall over Bearden’s Logan Peterson. Darris Reece wrestling at 138 had a ninth-place finish for the Cyclones with a pinfall over Cannon School’s Andrew Little.
 
Cory Lawson claimed a seventh-place finish at 138 pinning Pigeon Forge’s Colin Gray. Nathaniel Shepherd wrestling at 145 had an 11th-place finish as a result of his 15-8 decision over Morristown West’s Alan Sanchez.
 
Samuel Fletcher placed 14th after Dawson Jones of Sullivan East pinned Fletcher in the 13th place match. Fletcher had two wins on the day for the Cyclones.
 
Alex Conley brought gave the Cyclones a first place in the 170 weight class. Conley (33-7) took the top spot when he pinned John Bowman from Crockett in the first-place match.
 
Caleb Miller finished 10th while competing at 182. Miller defeated Roger Marshall of West Greene to advance to the ninth-place bout.
 
Ladarian Avery who has just started his wrestling season claimed 12th place at 182 as well.
 
The Deuce, Jonathan Morton (36-2), continued a rock-solid season as the defending state champion at 195 rolled through his opposition in the first four matches winning each by pinfall before winning the first-place match by major decision over Fairview’s Jacob Clevenger (32-8).
Finally, in the heavyweight division, Elizabethton’s Joseph Kechter continued to wrestle extremely well as Kechter brought home first place by virtue of his pinning of Hixson’s Devotis McCurdy (30-7).
The Cyclones finished seventh out of 19 teams with a team score of 138. Hixson took the overall team title with 284.5 points. Fairview finished second with 261 while host Greeneville took third place with 161.5.
Greenbrier (152.5), David Crockett (144), and Bearden (143.5) finished fourth through sixth just ahead of the Cyclones.
