HAMPTON – The Cloudland Lady Highlanders implemented every part of the sport of basketball on Tuesday at Hampton High School to work their way to the Area 1 Class A Regional championship over host Hampton.

Using a suffocating full-court defense, even distribution of the basketball on the offensive end, and controlling the boards, Cloudland took the 23-point win.

On offense, it all started with the MVP of the girls’ regional, Saharra McKinney who drove inside, stepped outside and made several trips to the foul line to record 18 points in the win.

Ryan Turbyfield played her steady self in being a huge contributing factor in the win with 10 points including two downtown Roan Mountain treys.

A trio of players accounted for three points apiece for the Lady ‘Landers including Bella Clawson, Izabella Christman, and Layken Blair.

Mia Clark hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe and provided invaluable defense while on the court.

Hampton, meanwhile, struggled to get going offensively due to several turnovers.

Gracie Ballard picked up six points to lead the Jr. Lady ‘Dogs in the contest. Lindsay Hardin collected four points – all in the first quarter of play.

Piper Helle and Hannah Smith chipped in with two points apiece while Faye Carrico added a free throw.

Third Place

Hunter………22

University…12

In a low-scoring affair, the Lady Tigers of Hunter managed to get the shots to fall when needed to extend their lead and then held on to defeat University School 22-12.

Mattie Salyer’s six points paced Hunter to the win. Julie Tolley was able to compliment Salyer’s outing with five points of her own.

A pair of Lady Tigers accounted for four points each in Alexis Fuller and Haley Taylor.

Alisha Harrell logged two points with Katlyn Dugger sinking 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.

University School received all their scoring from just three players as Vania Ortiz led her team with six points.

Emma Chandley had four points for the Lady Bucs. Lemy Ortiz netted two points.

All four teams advance to the Girls’ Sectionals which begin on Saturday at John Sevier Middle School.

Cloudland will play on Monday.
