Byrl Darrell Holt, 72, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 10, 2020, at his home, surrounded by family. Byrl was born in Newport, Tenn., to the late Byrl John Holt and Lucy Palmer Holt Rasar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, George Rasar.
Byrl retired from the United States Army as a Master Sergeant, after 20 years of service to his country. He served during the Vietnam Era and was honored with a Purple Heart and the Medal of Valor, among other commendations of service. He also retired from Tennessee Department of Corrections and enjoyed being in his office playing video games and riding motorcycles.
Those left to cherish Byrl’s memories include his loving and devoted wife of 33 years, Glenda Holt, of the home; his daughter, Sheila Ballard and husband Lenair of Woodford, Va.; his son, Richard Darrell Holt of Elizabethton; a step-daughter, Tammy Arrowood of Elizabethton; a step-son and wife of Elizabethton; nine grandchildren, Krystal, Ireland, Liam, Amber, Cody, Hannah, Austin, Brianna and Josh; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth Holt of Knoxville, Brian Holt of Newport and Ricky Holt, also of Newport; a step-sister, Ann Rock of Elizabethton; and a very special cousin, Patsy Turner of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, special friends and fellow veterans also survive.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, February 13, in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. A graveside service to honor and celebrate the life of Byrl Darrell Holt will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, February 14, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Chaplain Chris Hughes officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by Boone Dam VFW Post #4933. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Friday. The family would like to especially thank the staff of Amedysis Hospice and chaplains for the loving care given to Byrl during his illness.
