Robina’s Styling Salon lives on

Robina’s Styling Salon is going to live on with Danetta Oliver.

After Robina Hall, owner of the salon, passed away earlier this year, suddenly, Oliver, who had worked alongside Hall for over two decades, decided to take over.

Oliver met Hall when they both worked at Edwards Beauty Shop. The pair worked there for several years before Hall opened up her own salon and Oliver followed. The shop has now been open for 28 years.

“We’ve worked together about 36 years,” she said. “We’ve been together that long.”

Oliver said that prior to Hall’s passing, they had been planning on moving the salon to a new location as the building owner of their current location had been wanting to sell. The pair had selected a location on Sycamore Street and had already begun picking colors for the new salon.

“She wanted to do yellow and I was like ‘no we ain’t doing yellow,’” she laughed. “We ended up going with a mint green. Robina was easy going, she didn’t care what I did. She wouldn’t have cared if she walked in and I had moved the furniture around.”

Oliver described Hall as someone of adventure, who went traveling, and had a way with people.

“Robina knows more about the area than I do,” said Oliver. “She would ask you where you’re from and she knows a lot of areas and people. I hope to share stories about her. She had five kids, 10 grandkids, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She would’ve been 80 this month. She went parasailing just a couple years ago. When they took her out there she fell in the boat but when the guys asked her if she was sure, she said, ‘I’m doing it.’ We’ve been through a lot together.”

Oliver said Hall traveled everywhere from Hawaii to the Grand Canyon.

Despite missing her friend, Oliver said the transition has been made easier with help from Hall’s son and step-daughter. Additionally, clients have been understanding in the transition as she took on Hall’s clients as well.

While the new shop is smaller, Oliver has high hopes for the shop and will be keeping the name as it is already established, and as a tribute to her friend. The salon is also within walking distance of the previous location.

Services provided at the salon range from perms to hair cutting and coloring. Oliver said new clients are welcome with scheduling appointments. She does accept walk-ins, but they are more difficult with scheduling.

Oliver said the new location should be open by the end of this month.
