NASHVILLE (AP) — A woman and her estranged boyfriend who were found dead in a crashed car last week were shot to death before their vehicle went off the Tennessee roadway, Metro Nashville police said Monday.

Holly Williams, 33, and William Lanway, 36, were discovered with gunshot wounds in an Acura that had veered off a construction road and crashed into a tree, autopsy results released Monday showed.

A construction worker found their bodies at the bottom of the embankment in West Nashville on Friday morning, Metro police said in a statement.

Police alleged Lanway had a history of abuse against Williams. He was charged March 4 with aggravated assault and false imprisonment and accused of attacking her during a domestic violence incident, in addition to allegedly punching her last December, police said in the statement. Williams had a protection order against him at the time.

The agency said officers searched Williams’ apartment in an effort to identify possible suspects and motives.
