MILLIGAN COLLEGE — As part of Milligan College’s response to the coronavirus, the college’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program has canceled the remaining dates for the 2020 tax filing season. Milligan students and faculty previously were scheduled to assist local residents on Saturday, March 21, and Saturday, April 4.

Milligan encourages those scheduled to participate, as well as other eligible taxpayers, to use free filing options with the IRS, available at irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free.

Taxpayers eligible for VITA services include: people with annual incomes of less than $64,000; anyone with a physical disability; non-English-speaking citizens; and people older than 55.

“The VITA program is a highlight for many students during their time at Milligan,” said Heather Vaccaro, assistant professor of business administration. “Our students appreciate this practical, hands-on approach to servant-leadership, and we look forward to continuing this service again next year.”

Milligan’s VITA program has served local taxpayers for over a decade and is sponsored by Bank of Tennessee and Carter County Bank. Milligan student volunteers have completed hundreds of returns and saved local taxpayers thousands of dollars, with each client averaging over $1,000 in refunds.
