At the writing of this article, the East Tennessee Baseball League is merely a little over three hours away from swinging away at its inaugural campaign – one that comes at the expense of a missed high school baseball season that has local high school baseball teams ready, willing, and able to get back on the diamond.
Organized by Boyd Sports who runs the Elizabethton Twins and Johnson City Cardinal minor league programs locally, the league will feature 16 teams from the area comprised of rising high school juniors and seniors.
Those set to compete in the Eastern division include Science Hill, Elizabethton, Hampton, Dobyns-Bennett, David Crockett, Cherokee, Volunteer, Tennessee High, Sullivan East, University High #1, University High #2, Providence, Sullivan North, Greeneville, Abingdon, and John S. Battle.
A similar division will be played at Smokie Stadium with the winners from each division slated to play a world series at the end of the league’s season.
Games locally will be played Monday through Wednesday at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City and at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark here in Elizabethton.
Game times each day will be at 5 pm and 7:30 pm.
Team names will not carry their school names as the league is not sanctioned by TSSAA and therefore Elizabethton High will be known only as the Cyclones and Hampton will go by Bulldogs.
Other teams have chosen names like Home of Daniel Norris for Science Hill, The Boro for David Crockett, Wahoos for Cherokee, Redwings for Providence, Deamons for Greeneville, and Express for John S. Battle.
While some teams will be coached by their high school coaches, others like Hampton will be required to have coaches not affiliated with the high school coaching team.
With the Appalachian League more than likely done, this league should provide local baseball fans the opportunity to spend some time at their local ballparks while cheering on the teams.
The Cyclones open up action on Tuesday at 7:30 pm at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City while the Bulldogs’ first game will be Wednesday at 5 pm at Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark.
