JOHNSON CITY — East Tennessee State University’s Department of Rehabilitative Sciences is now offering a Sport Nutrition Graduate Certificate, which is designed for professionals and graduate students who are interested in increasing their knowledge of sport nutrition and helping athletes and sports enthusiasts to use food to enhance health and physical performance.
The new program, which begins this fall, can be completed fully online and requires 15 credit hours of graduate coursework.
“Sport nutrition is a natural, complementary fit of two fields, nutrition and exercise physiology,” said Dr. Michelle Lee, graduate coordinator and associate professor in the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences. “All people can benefit from proper nutrition and exercise, but athletes and sports enthusiasts must pay attention to how nutrition and training can improve their athletic performance.
“The demand is increasing for those with knowledge and skills that integrate nutrition with physical activity and sports.”
To address this increasing demand, Lee and Dr. Michael Stone, graduate coordinator and professor in the Department of Sport, Exercise, Recreation and Kinesiology, worked to develop a curriculum for the graduate certificate program.
The Sport Nutrition Graduate Certificate was designed specifically with working professionals (physicians, dietitians, athletic trainers, coaches and others who work in sports) in mind, offering flexibility and convenience of online coursework.
Coursework focuses on topics such as nutrition and exercise in weight management, nutraceuticals and dietary supplements for health and performance, current trends in sport nutrition, and others.
“More than ever, professional and college-level sports organizations are acknowledging the importance of exposing their athletes to more nutrition-conscious lifestyles,” Lee said. “ETSU’s online Sport Nutrition Certificate prepares individuals to provide sound sports nutrition information to athletes and physically active individuals.”
