Barbara Ann Mascott Phillips, 75, Butler, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. She was born November 28, 1944 in Newark, N.J., to the late Charles Joseph and Grace Marie Burke Mascott.
Barbara graduated from Hanover Park High School in East Hanover, N.J., and went on to graduate from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., with her teaching degree. She and her husband, Doug, met at Appalachian State. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Reading from East Tennessee State University.
Barbara was employed by the Carter County School System for 30 years and spent most of her career at Little Milligan Elementary School. The school and community were very special to her. Barbara loved to spend time with her family at the lake. When her health permitted, she attended St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her older sister, Mary Ann Harvey.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Douglas Phillips, her daughter, Jennifer (Danny) Clark, Johnson City, and son, Neal Phillips, Bristol, Tenn. She was Nana to her four grandchildren who loved her dearly, Cloe Clark, Clare Clark, Colby Clark and Caleigh Clark. They brought her so much joy and laughter. She is also survived by her sisters, Sue (Mike) Trieda, Indianapolis, Ind., and Jeanne (Lou) Befano, Fredericksburg, Md.; her brothers, Joe (Judy) Mascott, Center Valley, Pa., and Tom (Jenny) Mascott, Columbia, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 10, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Father Dennis Kress officiating. Interment will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
