To the Editor:
J. Hyder, the President of Carter County Democratic Women, didn’t agree with my letter to the editor on the need for voting for Christian leaders. Hyder said, “D.D. Nave, I correct you. I don’t know what government you are speaking about, but the United States of America was not created to promote Christianity, but to assemble a group of people, living in peace, under a well thought out Constitution, and open to all people around the world that would come, assemble and work together to self-govern their country.”
It appears the Christian heritage of America isn’t recognized or valued by Democrats. I am thankful for the Christian heritage of America. I will list some facts and quotes and let the people of Carter County decide.
The Mayflower Compact was the first civil governing document written in America and the new world in 1620. This is what the pilgrims in the Mayflower Compact stated their purpose as… “having undertaken for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith in the presence of God…” The late Dr. D. James Kennedy said, “Research has determined that of the 55 men who wrote our U.S. Constitution, 50 of them were unquestionably Christians, and possibly 52.” Kennedy also said, “99.8 percent of the people in America in 1776 claimed to be Christians.”
Christians established America’s government and controlled our government for most of the history of our country.
Our Christian founding fathers wanted Christian involvement in politics. George Washington in his farewell address said anyone who tries to remove Christianity from politics should not be considered a true American. The first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Jay, said, “God has given our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers.” George Washington said, “It is impossible to govern rightly without God and the Bible.” James Madison, the father of our U.S. Constitution said, “We wouldn’t have a Constitution were it not for the intervention of God.” Our founders knowing the Bible that people are evil and can’t be trusted with total power established separations of power, checks and balances and three branches of government from the Bible, Jeremiah 17: 9, Isaiah 33:22, etc. The U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1892, Church of the Holy Trinity v. U.S., the court citing dozens of precedents from American history, unanimously affirmed that America was a Christian nation!
As America moves away from Christianity it moves away from freedom. American political freedom has its origins in the spiritual freedom of Christianity. Christianity is the only religion that promises and brings freedom. President Obama was correct to say we aren’t a Christian nation. Any country that could abort millions of babies and recognize same-sex marriage, isn’t Christian.
Without a national revival and return to Jesus, America will come to the place President John Adams warned about. Adams said, “Our Constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It’s wholly inadequate to the government of any other!” President Teddy Roosevelt said, “There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language…and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.” Today’s history books need to take into account the large part played by Christianity in American government and success. The decisions of our Christian founders and Christian presidents bless us today. We are in debt to them and they deserve honor and recognition. America owes the most to Jesus for protecting and guiding our founders. Ultimately, everything good we have or ever will have we owe to Jesus our Lord and Savior and soon coming King!
