Residents of Carter County will have the opportunity to hear from Democratic candidates live on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The Carter County Democrats Rally and Picnic will be taking place at Kiwanis Park in Elizabethton beginning at 11 a.m.

“Grab your lawn chair and mask for social distanced fun, food and politics,” the event description states.

At the event, local candidates, Blair Walsingham, Amber Riddle and Bobby Harell will be speaking on their campaigns and visions.

Also, Carleen Claybaker, a retired nurse, will speak on COVID-19 safety, with a focus on masks, from how to wear one to how to safely remove it.

Melissa Fiero, chair of the organization, spoke on the message this event promotes.

“We want people to know that Democrats are proud to represent our candidates and be out in the community, that we want to do it safely, and that we are looking forward to the opportunity to come together, see old friends and hear candidates, but do so in a safe manner,” she said.

Fiero said everyone is welcome to attend.

“If they want to hear what the Democratic candidates stand for, what their platforms are, what they hope to accomplish, then this is an excellent opportunity to come and do that,” she said. “We are an open-tent party, and we welcome anyone who wants to come and peacefully participate.”

The event, which is held every summer, will be following social distancing guidelines.

“We just sat down and talked about ways that we could get as close to that annual event as possible, in an election year but also do it safely, and this is what we came up with,” Fiero said.

The event will include sanitization areas and other distancing abilities for attendees. Additionally, it will also be available for viewing online.

While tickets are free, box lunches are available for pre-order for 10 dollars with a choice of Hokie Smokie’s pulled pork or smoked chicken sandwich with potato salad and coleslaw, cookie, and a soft drink.

This service is available for curbside for those unable to attend.

Fiero said that in the case of bad weather, the event will also go on virtually as well.
