UNICOI — The Town of Unicoi will host a free drive-in movie at its Tourist Information Center Saturday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. at 106 Unicoi Village Place. Sound will be played through FM radio and concessions will be available.
“We’ve never tried a drive-in movie before,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “But COVID has changed a lot of things this year and we’re just happy we’ve found a way to give the community something to do that’s relatively low risk.”
The recently relocated Clinchfield Caboose CRR111 will support the screen, with cars lining up back through the Mountain Harvest Kitchen parking lot, and the feature will be a family-friendly Disney movie. A map of the setup may be viewed on the town’s website in addition to the announcement of which Disney movie will be showing. The newly finished Buffalo Pavilion will house the concession stand and food-handling precautions will be taken, including masks and gloves and one person to handle money while another handles the food in an effort to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 exposure.
“This is exactly what we want to see at the Village Place Complex,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Johnny Lynch. “The pavilion, visitor center, kitchen and future amphitheater … just all of it working together to create a space that’s multifunctional and really useful to the residents and visitors.”
Concessions will open at 7 p.m., including Little Caesars Pizza for $1 per slice or $6 for a whole pie (paper plates provided for less mess in vehicles). The movie will start at dark and guests are asked to remain in their vehicles except for restrooms and concessions, and only one person from each car is allowed in the concession line. Masks are required if out of the vehicle and guests are asked to please practice socially distancing.
Special thanks to drive-in movie sponsors Unicoi Walmart, Single Dad Homesteading and Erwin Record for their generosity and contribution to local community events.
