Carl Awh, MD named President of the American Society of Retina Specialists

Carl C. Awh, MD, of Tennessee Retina, based in Nashville, has been named President of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the largest organization of retina specialists in the world. Dr. Awh has been a member of the board of directors of the ASRS since 2004 and a member of its Executive Committee since 2012. The Society serves as a national advocate and primary source of clinical and scientific information and education for over 3,000 members in 63 countries. The mission of the American Society of Retina Specialists is to provide a collegial open forum for education, to advance the understanding and treatment of vitreoretinal diseases, and to enhance the ability of its members to provide the highest quality of patient care. A physician at Tennessee Retina since 1994, Dr. Awh’s special interests include macular surgery, macular degeneration, and the development of surgical devices and techniques. He is an active investigator in industry-sponsored and National Eye Institute-sponsored clinical trials, holds 12 U.S. patents for retinal surgical devices and treatments, and has designed dozens of instruments in widespread use by vitreoretinal surgeons. Dr. Awh was named to the inaugural class of the Retina Hall of Fame in 2017.
